Steven R. Scanlan, M.D. is a double board-certified physician in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine, practicing in South Florida. With extensive experience in office-based detoxification, he specializes in safely managing withdrawal from substances including alcohol, opioids (such as methadone and buprenorphine/Suboxone), benzodiazepines, and marijuana. Over the course of his career, Dr. Scanlan has successfully performed thousands of outpatient detoxifications and is widely recognized as a leader in addiction medicine. His clinical interests include dual diagnosis treatment, relapse prevention, and psychopharmacology. He has contributed to the field through published work and conference presentations.

Dr. Scanlan earned his undergraduate degree in Zoology, graduating Cum Laude from Miami University in Ohio. He completed his medical education at Northeastern Ohio Medical University, where he ranked in the top third of his class. His internship at the University of South Florida’s Tampa General Hospital included rotations in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology. He went on to complete his Psychiatry residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

His professional background includes roles such as Attending Physician at the Watershed Rehabilitation Center, Staff Psychiatrist for Armor Correctional Services (serving the Broward Sheriff’s Office), and Medical Director at several treatment facilities including the Amy Winehouse Foundation, AWARE Recovery Care (Florida), Olympus PHP, and Banyan Detox. Since 2009, he has been the owner and Medical Director of Palm Beach Outpatient Detox in Boca Raton, Florida, where he developed and implemented The Scanlan Method for Safe Outpatient Detoxification, a protocol that has also been used to train other board-certified psychiatrists.

Dr. Scanlan remains actively involved in continuing education and certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Addiction Medicine. Outside of his clinical work, he enjoys spending time with his family and pets, playing tennis, and staying engaged with the recovery community.
