Andrew Baker, PhD
Andrew Baker, LMHC, NCC is a mental health counselor who has worked with adolescents, adults, couples, and families; and now specializes in counseling young adults who are struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. He earned his Masters of Education from Florida Atlantic University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He will also graduated with his Ph.D. in Counselor Education at FAU where he conducts research on the client-therapist relationship, and works as an adjunct instructor. His concentration is on underlying mental health issues, viewing addiction as a symptom of more complex problem. He believes focusing on these mental health difficulties concurrently with addiction is paramount in providing effective treatment. Andrew recognizes the relationship between clients and their therapists is of the utmost importance. He focuses on setting and achieving specific goals, navigating difficult relationships, and developing effective coping strategies.
Andrew treats each client uniquely, and his approach is non-judgmental and encouraging. His counseling is holistic and strength-based. He helps clients to more fully understand and accept themselves and others. His primary counseling approaches (Adlerian and Narrative Therapy) are geared towards improving interpersonal relationships, building social connection, and shifting style of life patterns that often impede recovery. This type of therapy identifies and mobilizes each person’s strengths in dealing with life difficulties in order to attain their individual goals. He also integrates interventions from CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy), Existential, Acceptance and Commitment, Mindfulness-based, and Dialectical Behavior Therapies into his work with clients. Andrew’s counseling philosophy is very simple: life is often difficult, and sometimes people get stuck. Andrew does not view clients as “sick” or “broken.” He believes that although life presents us all with challenges, there is much more to be hopeful about, particularly with the right support.
